University FCU Joins “Open Your Eyes” Campaign

CUAD is thrilled to report that University Federal Credit Union of Grand Forks, North Dakota has also joined the “Open Your Eyes” Awareness Initiative with a three-year financial commitment to the campaign. With this pledge, University FCU joins numerous credit unions in supporting the initiative’s goal to promote and increase credit union membership in the Dakotas and nationwide.


“When I initially viewed the CUNA Open Your Eyes Awareness campaign video, I was impressed with the simplicity of the messaging,” stated Lacey TerWee, CEO of University FCU. “Even as the CEO of a closed charter credit union, I appreciate that the campaign seeks to correct myths about eligibility. University FCU’s field of membership includes the University of North Dakota (UND) student, staff, and faculty population, as well as their immediate family members. This translates into many members of our city being within our field of membership as an immediate family member is employed by UND.”


She continues, “Secondly, the campaign’s goal of dispelling the perception that credit unions are only local institutions, strongly aligned with University FCU’s goal to maintain our student member accounts after their graduation. Ultimately, our board of directors was pleased with the opportunity to invest in a widespread marketing campaign that will raise the awareness of all credit unions. At a small credit union you watch every dollar. I am confident that the three year investment in CUNA's Open Your Eyes Awareness campaign is well worth the money,” she concluded.

“This commitment from University FCU is very exciting and much appreciated,” says Jeff Olson, President/CEO of CUAD. “As Lacey points out, this campaign is specifically designed to overcome the myths about credit unions that keep Americans zombie-marching to banks. It’s designed to enhance consideration of credit unions as the best choice for financial partners. We have high expectations for real results,” he added.


The “Open Your Eyes” awareness initiative promises to be a game changer for America’s credit unions and will feature web-friendly video specifically intended for use on digital channels with highly-targeted demographic targets. It is exciting, engaging, and thoroughly modern in every way. Here in the Dakotas, we could start to see some of the digital ads as soon as February!


CUAD is extremely pleased to see more and more credit unions joining the campaign and making pledges. Our plan is to feature each credit union that has signed on to the campaign in the Memo, so stay tuned to see who else is getting on board!
