Good Morning and Happy New Year!

It is officially 2019, and we have hit the ground running. Legislative season has begun in earnest for both of our Dakotas. Hearings of interest to credit unions are taking place in North Dakota this week, and South Dakota Governor Noem’s first State of the State address takes place today.

The 66th North Dakota Legislative Session which opened on Jan. 3rd is limited to 80 legislative days and will close on April 30th. During the 65th Legislative Session in 2017, there were 436 house bills and 344 senate bills introduced. The 94th South Dakota Legislative Session kicks off today, and will include 40 Legislative Days and is set to conclude on March 29th. In 2017, there were 320 bills introduced in the House and 215 in the Senate. During the prior sessions, the ND and SD Government Affairs Committees tracked nearly 70 bills important to credit unions, and we are anticipating a similar bill total in 2019.

Register Today – South Dakota Credit Union Legislative Day.

It’s time to register for the SD Credit Union Legislative Day! The event is rapidly approaching and will take place on Wednesday, January 23rd at the Ramkota Hotel in Pierre. Each year, CUAD hosts South Dakota credit unions in Pierre for one day dedicated to credit union advocacy. The event includes a “Hike” up to the State Capitol, where our credit unions are recognized in both chambers during the day’s session. Following our visit there, we have invited our state legislators back to the Ramkota for a social event with heavy hors d’oeuvres taking place from 4:00-8:30 p.m.

Schedule of Events.

11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - SD Governmental Affairs Committee Meeting (Committee Members Only)

1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. - Hike the Hill

3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. - CEO Dialogue

Additional Event Information.

I sincerely appreciate everyone’s continued support for our South Dakota Credit Union Day. As you know, this is a great way to build relationships with and show support for our state lawmakers. It also provides a great networking opportunity for credit union professionals in South Dakota to come together to share ideas and celebrate the good work that credit unions do in our communities!

Please note: having a head count in advance is important to planning any successful event! Please, REGISTER TODAY if you haven’t already done so. You don’t want to miss out on this great opportunity to help advocate the benefits of credit union membership to your elected officials! I look forward to seeing everyone in Pierre on January 23rd.

As always, if you have questions, concerns or feedback regarding these or any other advocacy issues, please do not hesitate to contact me. Have a great week!
