Legislative Update with Jay Kruse

Chief Advocacy Officer

Good Morning!

Both the House and Senate are in session this week, while President Trump and Congressional leaders continue negotiations hoping to reach an agreement to fund the federal government through September 30th.  The current agreement funds the federal government through February 15th.

Freshly sworn-in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has again extender her invitation to President Trump to address a joint session of Congress this evening for his State of the Union address. Pelosi previously rescinded her invitation during the Government Shutdown. President Donald Trump has accepted and will detail his agenda for his third year in office. It is believed a large portion on his speech will be dedicated to funding the government and the ongoing standoff about immigration and border wall funding.

We will also be monitoring Tuesday’s State of the Union address for mentions of credit union priorities. The State of the Union is scheduled for this evening, starting at 8 p.m. CT.

Association Healthcare Trust Bill – House Hearing this week!

SB 37, a bill that would open up South Dakota credit unions to join the CUAD Health Benefits Trust, passed through the SD Senate earlier this session and now moves on to the House where it will receive a hearing in the Commerce and Energy Committee Wednesday morning. CUAD will be in Pierre testifying in support of the bill during the hearing that is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. CT.

Following a successful result in the House committee, the bill would then move on to the House floor to receive its final vote. This ultimately will open the door for many associations in this state and other states to have the opportunity to control some of their health care costs by offering a Health Benefits Trust to their members’ employees.
