With Tax Day coming on April 15, we’re dedicated to helping you prepare for false attacks on the credit union tax status. In the past, the bankers associations in the Dakotas and many of their members have used April 15th, “Tax Day” to release misleading and false ads, opinion letters, and social media posts. This is all designed to portray the credit union tax exemption in a negative light and create resentment among tax paying citizens.

We shouldn’t let false narratives go unanswered, so we’re arming you with turn-key resources you can use to set the record straight in the press or social media now, and in the future. Further, we don’t recommend waiting to prepare for these potential attacks, which is why we wanted to empower you with this Toolkit today, giving you time to plan your social media/online messages, or even pen an op-ed for your local press using a sample template.

Find the complete Tax Day Toolkit from CUNA here. CUAD staff has been perusing the material in advance, and we think you will be pleasantly surprised. The simple, organized, and eye-catching messages can help us to be proactive in deflecting bankers’ attacks, as opposed to being reactive.

Using these materials, you can quickly shut down attacks on social media, respond to news articles with letters to the editor, display thought leadership in your community by penning an op-ed, and more. Also included are several focused messages that speak directly to the benefits credit unions afford their communities that you can use in the lead up to Tax Day.

Be sure to follow the Credit Union Association of the Dakotas on Facebook and @CUADMemo on Twitter, as well as CUNA’s Facebook page and @CUNA on Twitter and Instagram to keep up with the latest messaging around Tax Day and bank attacks.

Finally, don’t forget to educate your members and employees about the importance of preserving our tax status by directing them to www.DontTaxMyCreditUnion.org. Credit unions’ tax exempt status doesn’t just benefit credit unions; it benefits each and every member and the communities we serve. We cannot be complacent about retaining our tax exemption.
