ULEND Academy Wraps Up in Sioux Falls
by CUAD Communications

It was a full conference room at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Sioux Falls, SD this week, as 32 credit union professionals, the maximum allowed, all attended the CUAD and CUNA Mutual Group ULEND Academy™. With a vast range of lending experience, from novice to more than 30 years, each and every individual received unique and helpful information that they could take with them, and use immediately back at their individual credit unions. “That’s the beauty and one of the benefits of ULEND Academy™ – there is something for everyone, and even the most seasoned lenders are learning something new, while new lenders are not overwhelmed,” said George McDonald, CUAD’s Chief Officer of Strategic Services.

Barb Asleson, Branch Manager at Dakotaland FCU had rave reviews for the class. “This was my first experience at a ULEND Academy and what a phenomenal experience it was,” she exclaimed. “I learned so much, and the presenters made it fun and educational. One of the main points I gained from the class was how to really consult with the member to learn deeper information about them, their passions and their financial goals, to structure a truly long-lasting relationship. Admittedly, as a lender, there are times I feel like an ‘order-taker,’ but this class helped me remember that we are the experts, and we are here to help our members not only now – but through all their seasons of life. The tools I took away from the academy will not only improve my skills as a lender, but will also improve our member relations at the credit union. Thank you, ULEND Academy,” she added.

Another attendee, Erin Strange, Member Service Officer at Sioux Falls FCU, found the class was a great way to “brush up” on her skills. “While attending ULEND Academy I noticed there were many concepts and ideas I was already very familiar with; many of these had been previously brought to my attention through internal education within my company and personal learning,” said Strange. “It was wonderful to have a more in-depth look into how everything applied to the loan process and building lasting relationships with our members. I am glad to have had the chance to go to ULEND to brush up my skills that may have become rusty, and apply some new ideas,” she added.

Finally, Lacey Hetletved, Branch Manager at Capital CU had this to say about the class. “I especially liked the interaction, which started right off the bat as opposed to days of just sitting and listening. For a new lender coming in, this course can really help to start those important conversations with members. But, it’s also a good reminder for experienced lenders to slow down – and listen.” In addition, Hetletved found the explanation of how to effectively read credit reports extremely beneficial, as well as the smaller class size that gives everyone a chance to be heard. “I highly recommend!” she concluded.

The ULEND Academy™ is a hands-on, customized learning experience that helps lenders go from transactional to consultative, meeting members’ full financial needs. The curriculum guides lenders from foundational to advanced skill levels in all lending channels and across all stages of the loan process - origination, underwriting, and closing - with cross-selling, consultation, and compliance woven throughout.

The Sioux Falls class was the second CUAD arranged ULEND Academy that sold out shortly after registration opened. We are currently making plans for another event to be held this fall. Contact Deb Kruckenberg to have your name placed on the list!
