Credit unions based in North and South Dakota recently received honors at the state level in the Louise Herring Philosophy In Action program. This prestigious award honors credit unions for their practical application of the People Helping People philosophy that is the hallmark of the credit union movement.

Congratulations to these First Place winners who will advance for national judging at the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) along with credit unions from around the country in their same asset category.

Less than $50M in Assets: Postal Family Federal Credit Union (Fargo, ND)

$50M to $250M in Assets: United Savings CU (Fargo, ND)

$250M to $1B in Assets: Capital Credit Union (Bismarck, ND)

Congratulations are also in order for the following credit unions: North Star Community Credit Union (Maddock, ND) received second place in the $250M to $1B category and Railway Credit Union (Mandan, ND) received second place in the $50M to $250M category.

The Louise Herring Award is named after a credit union pioneer who believed that the operational application of credit union philosophy helped better people’s lives. Louise believed that credit unions should work in a practical manner and she saw the credit union as more than just a financial institution. In her own words, “the purpose of the credit union is to reform the financial system, so that everyone can have his place in the sun.” Credit unions receive this award for internal programs and services that greatly benefit membership.

The entries from the Dakotas were judged this year by an awards committee made up of ten judges from the Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN). Each credit union will be recognized with an engraved award plaque during the 2020 CUAD Annual Summit being held at the Sheraton Sioux Falls & Convention Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, May 4-6, 2020.
