The President's Perspective
by Jeff Olson

I am looking forward to our final major educational event of the year, as we are headed to South Dakota today for our New Ideas Conference. Our annual event kicks off at 5:30 tonight when registration opens at Hay Camp Brewery in downtown Rapid City. It’s been a few years since we have been in the Black Hills area for our fall conference, and if I recall correctly, the last time we were there was Deadwood in 2013 – when we experienced a major fall blizzard. Snow is in the forecast for the Hills later in the week; however, we should have our meeting all wrapped up and everyone home before the bad weather arrives on Thursday.

As is the tradition at the New Ideas Conference, we’ll be taking a deep dive into the latest financial service trends and industry disrupters while we’re here. This year, we have an incredible lineup of industry leaders presenting their ideas and sharing their success stories. Back by popular demand, we are featuring the Filene Research Institute’s Immersion Workshop, “From Innovation to Implementation” led by Elry Armaza. Jesse McGannon from Strategic Resource Management will be demonstrating how credit unions can get started at future-proofing their operations. And, Josh Cook will be sharing his nationally-recognized marketing expertise, inspiring credit unions of all sizes to change results by changing perceptions. Be sure to watch the Memo over the next few days for highlights and photos, as well as our social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter.

Limited Seats still available for Final ULend Academy of 2019.

You asked for it, and CUAD delivers! We added a third ULend Academy workshop this year – but there are just a handful of seats remaining. If you want to receive this popular training facilitated by lending experts from our system partners at CUNA Mutual Group yet this year, the final opportunity will be October 29 – 30 in Bismarck. Secure your spot today!

Health Benefits Trust call for South Dakota prospective members set for Thursday.

There will be an informational call this Thursday, October 10th at 3:00 p.m. CT for South Dakota credit unions to learn more about our prospective Health Benefit Trust options. Interested credit unions were sent recommended health care options and prospective rates last week. We will have our insurance broker and third-party administrator on the call to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding the South Dakota options. I want to remind members that we are still waiting for final approval on our waiver request from the South Dakota Insurance Department, and this is an informational call only for South Dakota prospective members. Contact Karla Clark to receive the conference call invite.

Calling For 2020 GAC Crashers!

Once again, CUAD is hoping to see a North and South Dakota Crasher at the 2020 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference that takes place February 23 – 27. This is an amazing opportunity for credit union professionals age 35 and under to attend the biggest credit union advocacy event of the year in Washington, DC.

Crashers receive free conference registration from CUNA – that alone is worth nearly $1,200! Travel, lodging, and food costs are the responsibility of the Crasher and their credit union, however, CUAD will be awarding a $750 scholarship to each Dakota Crasher that is selected. (Last year, we had three Crashers representing the Dakotas, including Lacey TerWee, Rachel Lere, and Joey Rotert. Read more about their experience here.)

Applications for Crashers opened on October 1st and will close on November 30, 2019. We also want you to be aware that unlike previous years when deadlines were extended, this year they have declared November 30th is a hard deadline. I encourage serious, young credit union professionals to take advantage of this amazing opportunity and apply early. Your career will never be the same! You can find more information and apply here.

Have a great week.
