The President's Perspective
by Jeff Olson

Happy Monday!

My greetings to you this week come from my home where I’m recovering from a hip surgery that I underwent early last week. It’s amazing how a health issue can set one back. So far, recovery is going well, and I sincerely appreciate all the well wishes.

It is hard to imagine that we are only 10 days away from the Thanksgiving holiday! Here we are with only two weeks remaining in November. This also means that the CUPAC/CULAC Holiday Raffle is in full swing! This popular fundraiser provides participants with the opportunity to get in on $5,000 in prize offerings this year. The Raffle ends on November 30 and the official drawing will take place Thursday, December 12th. Good Luck and thank you for your continued support of this activity.

Membership survey reminder to Dakota credit union CEOs.

Each year during this time, we reach out to our membership and ask them to provide us with feedback that will help us better fulfill our objectives. A few weeks ago, we sent out our annual membership survey to CEOs and managers. If you already haven’t done so, please take a few minutes and complete this brief membership survey. If you did not receive the survey, please contact Lori Welder.

It is the mission of the Credit Union Association of the Dakotas to help our member credit unions succeed. We do this through legislative and regulatory advocacy and support; by protecting and enhancing the credit union operating environment; and by promoting the credit union difference and creating consumer awareness. We accomplish this by fostering service excellence, providing high level education and training, and through our business partnerships and solution providers. Your feedback is very important to us in our mission, and necessary in helping guide your professional trade association.

Honor your credit union stars with CUAD Awards!

Each year, CUAD recognizes outstanding credit union advocates with several prestigious awards, including Professional of the Year; Emerging Leader; Volunteer of the Year; and our highest achievement, the Hall of Fame Award. These awards recognize those individual employees and/or volunteers who have contributed to a credit union’s success. We strongly encourage you to consider nominating your accomplished professionals for one of these prestigious awards.

In addition, CUAD honors those credit unions that have had a noticeable and measurable positive impact in their community with the CU Social Good Award. Credit unions that executed a successful campaign are encouraged to apply for the Marketing and Communication Award. Plus, each year, one outstanding credit union chapter will receive the Chapter of the Year Award for their efforts in advocacy, communication, education and community involvement.

Finally, the Arnold Paulson Scholarship is awarded to one individual to attend the CUAD Summit, and the William O. Knight, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is bestowed upon one recipient towards CUNA Management School.

We hope you consider nominating a credit union, employee or volunteer you feel has gone above and beyond for the credit union industry! All entries must be received no later than December 20, 2019 and may be mailed to 2005 N Kavaney Drive, Bismarck, or submitted electronically to Deb Kruckenberg. The CUAD Awards will be presented during the awards banquet at the Annual Summit in Sioux Falls, May 4 – 6, 2020. Complete information and the nomination forms can be found here on the CUAD website.

GAC Crasher Deadline and GAC Scholarships Available now.

The CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) will be here before you know it – February 23 – 27 in Washington, DC. If you are thinking about applying to be a GAC Crasher, the deadline is fast approaching on November 30. If you know someone aged 35 and under that would be a great fit, make sure you share the application info with them! CUAD will provide a $750 financial assistance scholarship to anyone selected as a Crasher this year.

Speaking of the GAC, we are also accepting scholarships applications from anyone who is considering attending CUNA GAC conference! The 2020 GAC Scholarship Assistance program was created to provide financial assistance to credit union professionals who are members of CUAD to attend the GAC. Scholarship awards are typically between $500 and $1,000 depending on the number of qualified applicants. To be considered, you must complete the application in its entirety.

You can find everything you need to register for GAC, apply as a Crasher or for one of our scholarships, and housing information at our “one stop GAC shop” here on the CUAD website.

360 Degree Advocacy.

Last week we followed the House Financial Services Committee as they marked up several bills, including three on debt collection and one on mortgage access. The credit union position is always to put credit union members first. That’s why we engage on every piece of legislation that impacts our movement.

Have a great week!
