A North Dakota Credit Union located in Grand Forks has been announced as a first place winner of the 2019 Dora Maxwell Award by the Credit Union National Association’s (CUNA) National Awards Committee. Staff at Riverfork Federal Credit Union were extremely pleased and excited to learn the news that was announced by CUNA late last week. Riverfork FCU received first place in the less than $50M in assets category for their project to support the Altru Cancer Center.

Because so many people are affected either directly or indirectly by cancer, Riverfork wanted to bring comfort to those going through cancer treatment with a gift bag. The credit union worked with Altru Cancer Center to obtain a list of items needed by those going through chemotherapy treatment. Some of the items included hard candy, lip balm, books, fuzzy socks, blankets, scarves, hand sanitizer, lotion, and water bottles.

With the support of members, the credit union then collected these items in its lobby. In addition to the donation drive, the credit union staff held a bake sale fundraiser, and used the money to buy additional items. In all, the credit union donated more than 100 comfort gift bags!

“We are thrilled to be honored with this award,” said Veronica Holweger, CEO of Riverfork FCU. “The cancer center gift bag project is one of numerous charitable activities we participated in throughout the year. The credit union’s charitable giving plan is a high priority for us, and its successful completion is possible because of the efforts of our staff, volunteers, and members,” she added.

The Dora Maxwell Award is presented to credit unions for outstanding social responsibility projects in their communities. Credit unions that win at the state level advance to the national awards. The winning credit unions will be recognized at CUNA’s 2019 Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC), February 23 – 27, in Washington, D.C.
