*Editor’s note: Catch Jeff Olson on an industry-wide podcast today! CUAD’s President/CEO recently participated in an interview with Randall Smith, Co-Founder of CU Insight and host of the CU Insight Experience podcast series. The topic: Staying relevant! During the 30 minute interview, Jeff discusses his leadership style, what he has learned about the industry, and also gives a great account of the progress that CUAD’s CU Social Good project has made. Greetings and Happy Monday!

The general theory is that the month of January is a bleak and drawn out month. Not only is it an extra long month with 31 days (meaning it encompasses nearly five weeks), it’s often our coldest and harshest here in the great Dakota tundra each year. So, the perception and the reality is that January is long, dark, and dreary, and we just want to get through it. In Latin, January is named after the Latin word for door, which is interpreted as the door to the year and an opening to new beginnings. The month is also named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and transitions. So, here’s to a new month and to the transitioning from winter to spring, hopefully soon!

Celebrating Credit Union Day at the South Dakota Capitol in Pierre.

I’m truly looking forward to connecting with South Dakota credit union leaders and advocates in Pierre this Wednesday. We will be convening to celebrate South Dakota Credit Union Day at the State Capitol and host our annual Legislative Social with state lawmakers. This is an important credit union advocacy event each year where credit unions can make a difference. We have learned that lawmakers take notice to personal, face-to-face connections with their constituents, and that’s where our efforts at the Capitol and during the Social directly help us build and enhance our relationships with our state lawmakers. Last minute joiners are still welcome! Just sign up here

New security protocol at the SD Capitol.

Jay Kruse mentioned in his Legislative Update last week, but I would like to remind you that if you are planning on Hiking the Hill with us to the State Capitol, there are new security procedures in place this year. All Capitol visitors need to enter through the north doors (back, ground floor doors off the parking lot). You will be directed into a screening room, and signage will inform you of what items are not allowed in the building. Please plan a little extra time for these security measures.

And finally, I would like to send a big “shout out” and heartfelt thank you to Alloya Corporate FCU for their continued support and sponsorship of our SD Credit Union Day and Legislative Social.

Last Call for the MonDak Roundtable “Think Tank” for Dakota CU Leaders and Volunteers.

Who doesn’t want a mid-winter getaway? We’re just 15 days away from our 4th Annual MonDak CEO/Volunteer Roundtable meetings, but there is still time for you and your volunteer leadership to join us in Las Vegas!

The MonDak Roundtable has consistently offered provocative, strategic takeaways that can directly help you manage your credit union and better serve your members, and this year’s event raises the bar even higher. From innovation, succession planning, and discovering the credit union member of the future, to the hot topics and current issues impacting credit unions operations today, attendees will receive information that is both valuable and relative to their leadership positions. We’ll also provide an economic update and forecast, and we’ll take a deep dive into our credit union advocacy agenda and strategies for upcoming congressional session.

You can still make plans to join us, along with your Dakota and Montana peers on February 11-12, at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. Review the entire agenda, speaker information, and register here.
