Monday Miracle Moments
by Sanford Health Foundation

This week, on Thursday and Friday, January 30 & 31 – the 20th annual Cares for Kids Radiothon will be held at the Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. This important fundraiser will be broadcast on Y94 (93.7 FM), Froggy 99.9 FM, and KFGO (790 am and 94.1 FM).

Over the last several years, credit unions have played a significant role in this annual event, by volunteering to answer phones and by making pledges. We hope that this tradition continues! If you are in the listening area, please tune in to hear inspiring stories from Sanford Children’s Hospital, and we hope you will consider making a pledge on behalf of your credit union, or even a personal contribution.

Here is why your support is so crucial. Today, we are going to share a story about one little patient who has been helped at our local CMN Hospital. Beautiful little Leigha was born full-term weighing barely 3 pounds – the result of a genetic growth disorder that is so rare, it remains undiagnosed. She was rushed to the Sanford Partners Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Fargo, where she underwent surgery on her stomach and began treatment for a number of complications.

At five months old, Leigha was finally able to go home, but the worst wasn’t yet behind her. In July 2019 – just weeks after her second birthday – Leigha was diagnosed with stage 4 rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer that forms in the body’s soft tissue. Leigha immediately began treatment at Sanford Children’s Hospital and the Roger Maris Cancer Center. Within a month, her curly dark hair began falling out from the chemotherapy – a painful milestone in what will be a long, difficult journey. She will continue weekly chemotherapy treatments – some that require lengthy hospital stays to manage the harsh side effects – as well as radiation and surgery. Leigha’s miracle journey continues; she is sassy, strong willed and handles every hurdle with inspiring strength.

Dakota credit unions do a great job of supporting our three CMN Hospitals. Thank you for being a part of Leigha’s story, and for your support of Credit Unions for Kids, which helps to provide the necessary programs, services, and equipment to care for sick and injured kids throughout the region.

Recently, First Community Credit Union (Jamestown, ND) held fundraisers for their 2019 fourth quarter charity, which was Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) through Credit Unions for Kids. Together with support from the CO-OP Miracle Match Program, FCCU was able to donate $8,250 to Sanford Children's. Several FCCU staff members were able to tour the hospital when they presented their donation.

“It’s humbling to see the impact that a donation can make,” said Susan Long Swen, Event and Community Engagement Specialist with FCCU. She continued, “It was so nice getting to see a tour of the Children's Hospital in Fargo. We were able to see the amount of compassion and effort that staff provides to the children as well as their families. It's an honor to be able to donate to such a worthy cause.”
