A Little Facebook Creeping

Last week during the Leadership Roundtable discussion that took place in Pierre, the topic of social media engagement came up. It seems many credit unions are wondering what they can do to foster more engagement – particularly on their Facebook pages.

First, let’s all remember – social media should not be stressful, but rather a simple, and straightforward way to connect with members. To accomplish this, focus on planning and variety. Here are a few tips to get started.

Offer expert advice. Credit unions are in a great position to offer advice – and solutions – to members. Not sure what you should offer? Well, why not ASK. One credit union I read about just began starting conversations with people waiting in line. What better way to identify some content ideas than to get them straight from the members? If you can show how you can make their lives better, members will engage.

Hold contests. Give away things that your members want. Free t-shirts are an inexpensive way to get members’ attention – just make sure they are fun, and not simply promotional items. (Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union® T-shirts are great!) Alternately, you could offer gift cards – coffee shops and movie tickets are always hot items.

Be authentic. Let your members see the humans behind the desks. Highlight employees’ birthdays, accomplishments, and milestones for that personal connection. Chances are, your employees’ friends and family will chime in with some comments and good wishes!

With more than 3.2 billion social media users worldwide, credit unions of all sizes should not miss out. A successful message can be accomplished with little time and a small budget – and a bit of planning. Here are some great examples!
