Sioux Falls FCU Announces Retirement

Sioux Falls Federal Credit Union (SFFCU) has announced the retirement of longtime employee Karla Hanna. Karla started with the credit union in 1981 as a part-time teller during her college years, and later became the assistant finance officer. In 1986 she was named VP Member Services; in 1996 she was promoted to VP Operations; in 2004 she was promoted to Executive VP; and in 2019 her title was changed to EVP Innovation & Quality, the role she retained until retirement. Throughout her career, Karla continued her education through several CUNA programs, and was a member of the Credit Union Executive Society since 2008. She was a volunteer with the Junior Achievement program to promote financial literacy in schools, served as treasurer for the Sioux Valley Chapter of Credit Unions, as well as supporting the United Way as a campaign manager at SFFCU.

“I have been honored to work with Karla over the past 12 years of her wonderful career, and I have always been amazed at her breadth of knowledge and her passion to serve our members,” says Fran Sommerfeld, President/CEO of SFFCU. “We definitely have some big shoes to fill and we are thankful for the many contributions she has made to our success. We will miss her and wish for her all the best in retirement.”

Date Extended to CRASH the GAC!

We have just been informed that the date has been extended for those who wish to CRASH the GAC. Applications will now be accepted until January 31, 2021! The 2021 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) will be taking place virtually on March 2 - 4. Crash the GAC is an incredible opportunity for young credit union professionals to attend at NO COST. During the special CRASH the GAC program, up and coming credit union leaders will learn how to advocate for credit unions to their congressional representatives while receiving additional professional development and networking experience. Youth Month Theme Announced

CUNA has announced this year’s theme for National Credit Union Youth Month in April: “Be a credit union saver and your savings will never go extinct.” Kids love dinosaurs, and the Jurassic theme makes saving for the future fun and helps younger members appreciate the importance of putting money aside. This annual campaign is an opportunity to further engage with young members and show them that your credit union is there to help them throughout their financial journey. Virtual Learning Opportunity from NDHFA

North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) will host a virtual Homeownership Forum on February 11 and February 18. To provide its lending partners with this online learning opportunity, the agency partnered with Genworth Mortgage Insurance and Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation (MGIC). For the first webinar, Genworth’s MaryKay Scully will lead an introduction to the new Uniform Residential Loan Application, commonly referred to as the 1003/65, and Steve Richman will present “There’s No Going Back,” on the evolution of the mortgage industry that’s lead to today’s multi-dimensional connectivity. Beryl Johnson of MGIC will be the trainer for the Feb. 18 workshop, sharing the secret to effective communications and helping attendees identify the thieves that rob us of time and prevent us from accomplishing the things that benefit us personally and professionally. Spring DE Training Dates Announced

This coming spring, the National Credit Union Foundation is hosting two DE Training classes in a virtual learning environment. Over four weeks, participants will engage in a mix of on-demand and live learning sessions. Live learning sessions will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (CT) for the duration of training. The dates are: March 15 – April 9, 2021; and April 26 – May 21, 2021. Registration is open now!   


National Credit Union Foundation Virtual Celebration

The National Credit Union Foundation (the Foundation) has announced sponsorship and viewing packages are now available for purchase for the 2021 Foundation Celebration. On March 2, 2021, a virtual event featuring Wegner Award winners of the past will take place. The Foundation will not be presenting the annual Herb Wegner Memorial Awards in 2021 as they will wait to honor new winners in person with family and friends. However, they are still looking forward to bringing the spirit and inspiration of the Wegner Dinner into your organization and home through the Foundation Celebration. The Celebration will be a fun “night out” for our movement to get dressed up, experience interviews with some past Wegner Award winners with help from emcee Andy Janning, support the National Credit Union Foundation and an opportunity to get re-energized with passion for the difference we make as credit unions.
